New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Klô Pelgag unveils a tempestuous, haunting video for the song "Mélamine," off her latest album Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs, available everywhere via Secret City Records.
"Mélamine is when just being yourself isn't enough anymore, when your vision of yourself and of others is distorted, and your pain seems unique and overwhelming. And finally, the struggle to free yourself from this despair that has become casually comfortable," explains Klô Pelgag.
For this first collaboration with director Soleil Denault, the concept of the video is inspired by the same theme and illustrates the feeling of wanting to be somebody else, with the help of multiple characters with familiar faces. Soleil explains the creative inspiration behind the video: "Mélamine evokes an astral journey, a quest for identity through multiple versions of Klô. She is confused about the difference between her perception and reality, but she eventually figures her way out."
Klô Pelgag and her musicians will perform on November 28 at Palais Montcalm as part of the "Unlikely Concerts" series.
Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs was released in June and has received critical acclaim across the world. Recently, Anthony Fantano reviewed the album on The Needle Drop — a first for a francophone album. Fantano called the album "genuinely subversive and adventurous" and said "There are tons of beautiful creative highlights on every corner of this project."
In France, Télérama gave it its highest rating — four keys (the equivalent of five stars)—while FrancoFan and Longueur d'ondes hailed the originality of the artist and the emotional power of the record: "Wise violins and crazy piano coexist in a heady, harmonic, Kate Bushian album, which features very original vocals as always." (Longueur d'ondes) "This album is a natural, emotional journey, to be deeply experienced" (Francofan). Rolling Stone France concurs: "A simultaneously subversive and unique project, featuring baroque pop haunted by her anxieties and her powerful imagination, with rich instrumentation." In Belgium, Le Soir declared that "Her original songs always feature a sense of drama that makes her one of the most fascinating Quebec artists." In Canada, Exclaim! awarded the album four stars, and in Quebec, critics were unanimous: five stars from Journal de Montréal "The LP of 2020 is here," 9/10 from Le Canal Auditif "a relevant, daring creation," and four stars from La Presse, "a rich album."
